Position Description: Stage Director
Madison Savoyards, Ltd. was founded in 1963 to present Gilbert and Sullivan productions in Madison, Wisconsin. The company’s annual mainstage production is presented in August and runs for two weekends. The productions are fully staged, costumed, and performed with a chamber orchestra. The cast is composed of hobbyists, emerging singers, and professional artists. Cast, crew, orchestra, and production staff receive stipends, and the Music Director and the Stage Director positions are also paid.
The August 2024 production will be Patience, and it will be performed at the Bartell Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Stage Director’s duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct auditions for cast and chorus for Patience in February 2024
- Design the appearance of the show, and obtain approval for the design and plan from the Savoyards Board
- Work with the Stage Manager, Production Manager, and the Music Director to establish the rehearsal schedule and other details of the production
- Work with the production team assembled by the Production Manager (Set Designer, Costumer, Lighting Designer, and Technical Director)
- Work with and help select a Choreographer if one is necessary
- Prepare and rehearse the cast and chorus of Patience
Show Timeline (pending venue confirmation):
- June 24-July 26: Rehearsals
- July 27-August 1: Tech Week
- August 2-4, August 9-11: Performances (6 performances over two weekends)
The ideal candidate will have experience with Gilbert and Sullivan operas, or similar kinds of productions.
